Interactive Hologram Flash Thing

Ok, I know that Graham posted a PV3d article that was something like this a while back, but the page never loaded up for me, so I never got to see it. This morning I saw this video posted last week by Robert Cooper, the  Creative Director at Ogilvy, that is demonstrating the same concept, (this time for GE and their “PlugIntoTheSmartGrid.com” campaign).

Basically it works like this.

1) You print out this piece of paper,

2) Then you launch this flash movie which activates your webcam. Hold the piece of paper up to your webcam and a 3D model pops out of your screen. It’s crazy.

As far as advertising is concerned, I’m not sure that this campaign is very successful (besides maybe creating a little bit of buzz around a cool new technology). I mean, if this is a campaign for plugging into the ‘Smart Grid?’ Wouldn’t it be about saving energy? That is to say, it wouldn’t promote printing out a piece of paper that will most likely be throw in the garbage seconds later?? But what do I know? In any case, this thing is worth at least 5 minutes of sheer entertainment. Here’s proof:

Oh, and here is some info on the source code behind this magic.
