a couple of fine chaps; electric works
so, my first post i figured should be near and dear to my heart. my dad’s book california in relief is being published this week among the 2009 CODEX International Book Fair and Symposium. now, i don’t know if many of you have attended many of these fine art symposiums—especially any relating to a near-dead artform—but you tend to get a bunch of blubbery, tweedy, somewhat-self-indulgent people, loosely referring to themselves as artists, who wear a lot of hemp and sometimes smell faintly like ben-gay.
now i love my father dearly and am truly excited for his achievements, so i attended the opening night of this gathering. i had expected to find much of the same-old-same-old…much to my surprise i stumbled upon my good friends kris and noah who own and run a soma gallery called electric works. they have a truly diverse set of artists they represent, cool books for sale like the newly translated and parlance-updated divine comedy (14K a set, however), as well as much smaller and more reasonable editions. check them out there’s some interesting stuff to see…
then i found the two fine chaps. they were, as the name of their press reflects, a couple of young chaps who have begun to publish their odd and quirky artistic endeavors; books with secret illustration reveals; miniscule dioramas with even tinier books printed inside them; fold out comics chronicling the exploits of two other young chaps brad and chad.
in days of pixels and wireframes, conference calls and keynote presentations, these works on paper showcase an amazing wealth of talent, and a craft that interacts in ways beyond what any microsite can hope for.
We should attend APE (Alternative Press Expo) this year. Lot of Zines and graphic novels, but very interesting nonetheless.
